Will long-term, frequent use of CBD or THC damage brain receptors, preventing antidepressants from working and actually making depression worse?
The reassuring part is that we do not have evidence that CBD or THC permanently damages brain receptors or makes antidepressants stop working.
Frequent THC use can cause tolerance and temporary changes in cannabinoid receptors, but human studies suggest those changes can reverse after stopping. THC can also worsen mood in some people, particularly with frequent use, so that is something I watch carefully.
CBD is different. We do not have evidence that it damages antidepressant responsiveness, though it can affect how some antidepressants are metabolized.
So my concern is less about permanently “rewiring” the brain and more about whether the medicine is helping, whether tolerance is developing, whether mood changes over time, and whether there are interactions with other medications.
